Figure 1: LinkVisitor as Seen in Mozilla Browser 1.5b

Why did I write this extension? I have a few web pages that I visit frequently. The pages have some useful links and of course some bad links. I will visit most of the visited links in the pages again to save time when looking for stuffs.

Unfortunately useless links do get marked as visited; sometimes I accidentally click them; and I must also visit new potential links to check their contents.

I used to open the History Window and removed any links that I found useless, and after doing it for too many times I decided to write an extension to make my life brighter. Okay the URLs in the history will be automatically removed after they expired, but this extension is still usable since useful links that get visited often will not expire anyway, unless you take a long vacation or something....

By the way, this extension is also useful to web page designers. Do you want to see the designed page with all links visited? unvisited?

Linkvisitor (1.1.20050315, uploaded on 14th March 2005 at 14:53 -0500) now has these localisations:
- it-IT, thanks jooliaan.
- fr-FR, thanks Wronschien.

Anybody is welcome to give new localisations (as long as it it not a made up language like klingon). Please provide the url for me to download the file and I will integrate it into the extension. Thanks.

It does not seem to work. I tried LinkVisitor on your page and nothing looks different. Am I doing something wrong? I am running FF 20050317 and I installed V 1.1 of LinkVisitor.

Biteman,

Please try it on other sites. This page uses the default mozdev page style which has brown links as unvisited and dark purple links as visited links. The colours are alomost alike to casual eyes. (By the way, you may also need to restart the browser once you install the extension).

Is there way to default your entry in contextmenu to the bottom editing the jar or userchrome?

(Only Extension does this for you is Menueditor but is only for the Firefox I don't use).

mreimer,

If you are familiar with XUL, you can unpack linkvisitor.jar installed in your user profile chrome directory. Look for file named lvbrowseroverlay.xul, and open it using notepad.

Then, locate this line:
<menu label="&vlPopup.label;" accesskey="&vlPopup.accesskey;" insertbefore="context-sep-properties">

and change it to:
<menu label="&vlPopup.label;" accesskey="&vlPopup.accesskey;" >

After that remember to repack the jar file,
find XUL.mfl in your user profile directory and delete it, and then restart your browser. Without insertbefore firefox will by default append the popup menu at the end.

Billy,

Thank you the reply.

You write "Without insertbefore firefox will by default append the popup menu at the end." I try this correctly even you look I write I don't use Firefox (Netscape 7.2 used).

This does not work. Yes I follow all instructions. Has no effect. Please look closer as I welcome please a new idea.

Billy,

Big thanks to your help. This is great extension and be much better to me if there is faster access at bottom on context menu.

Big wish for your talents or others to sometime port Menueditor Extension to Netscape and Mozilla Suite because its Developer only does Firefox Extensions.

Billy does very great work. Post is not to rush the work. Just let know there is nothing in email yet. Maybe Billy has great surprise that he will port Menueditor Extension for working in Netscape and Mozilla? Anybodies else too it is:

I test tricks I guess but I not have the talents to do Extension ports. 3 others I like but works only Firefox is CTC, Fusion, Tab Bin that all by 1 big Developer that also have Mozilla Extensions but not time to port these. If some smart person wants challenge all 3 on

Mreimer,

I have sent a modification to your email directly. Please read the instructions in the email and remember to backup your user profile first! If you have any problem, please email me directly :)

I am sorry but I have to decline to port your favourite extensions. I don't think it is wise for me to port it if the extension is still active. Maybe you can really plead the original author (I am sorry) or find somebody else to do it from mozillazine seamonkey forum.

By the way, the user notes in any mozdev sites will automatically swallow any posted links to discourage spammers. So if you really want to show the links, you need to be creative ;)

Good afternoon Billy,

are you aware of bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=290200 ?
Your wonderful extension needs to be rewritten following the new "rules".
I hope you'll do it as soon as you can. I'm missing a lot the possibility to use it :

Greetings
Giuliano aka jooliaan

Billy, following the "rules" explained on bug 290200 I've released a new build of LinkVisitor (1.1.20050415) compatible with Firefox 1.0.3 and earlier versions.
I don't claim any credit for that, I've only modified one line of your code as described in comment #4 of the above mentioned bug.
If you are interested in it, you can get the modified extension at this link: premium1.uploadit.org/jmax63/ext/linkvisitor-1.1.xpi (just put in front of the url).

Greetings

Is there a way to report bugs? There seem to be one in LinkVisitor that prevents the Ctrl+F2 keyboard shortcut from working on frames. The workaround is to click the frame before pressing the shortcut, but it would be nicer to be exempt from this extra step.

BTW, LinkVisitor is the only extension that I can't live without. It's the first (and mostly the only) extension I install after installing a new version of the browser. Keep up the good work!

Prog, as far as I know, shortcuts are for the active document only. So currently you need to activate the frame in order to apply the shortcuts to the frame.

Anyway, I will do some little research to see whether I can query all frames from a document and apply the action to all frames. Thank you for your suggestion. :)

Hallo Billy,

what I'm looking for is an extension that automatically marks links I visited before 8not manually as Link Visitor does. This feature is useful e.g. when surfing at ebay lists in order to know what offers have already been 'scanned'.
Do you know such an extension or would it possible to extend the link visitor by this function?

Curiously, I've just switched to Firefox 1.0.6 and found the very same problem.

I've realized that apparently the version available at (where I got the extension and the site where Firefox's menu sends you) is 1.1.20050315 while the one in here is 1.2-20050417. The download server seems to be down right now so I'll try again later and see if newer version fixes the issue.

I've "upgraded" other extensions in the past to work with newer versions by hacking the .rdf file, but I had one extension blow up and cause problems when I tried this. I know some are safe - how sure can we be that this is one of them?

I'll probably try it anyway, but I kinda feel like I shouldn't have to, and maybe I don't really have the right to. I'd really prefer to see the developer update this for 1.5+ so we can be sure it works properly.

I have just uninstalled the older version of link visitor and installed the new version for 1.5. The options appear, (mark link as visited, univisited, etc.), but the links don't change color. Is there a way to get this to work?

Where is LinkVisitor for use under Mozilla Firefox 2.0 ? Last vieved version 1.2 is incompatible.

The always mark bookmarks as visited is not working. The only reason a bookmarked link would be marked as visited is because you actually visited the site and then bookmarked it, and then press the back button and it would be marked as visited. However if you bookmark a site on a links page without visiting it and refresh the page it will not mark the link as visited.

If I am wrong please show me how to use that feature. Note I am aware of dynamic pages and I tested this with static page links.
Kudos great program though.

I am using Firefox 2 and downloaded Link Visitor 2 from the firefox website. Perhaps this is not a supported version. Please, when is there going to be an update for firefox 2. I am referring to the "mark bookmarks as visited links feature" because it is not working in Firefox 2 with the LinkVisitor 2
